Why GLP1s?

Medications like Semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy) and Tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound) seem to be all the talk these days in the weight loss community. But why?

First, let’s take a look at how they work: GLP1 medications mimic a hormone that is naturally secreted in the gastrointestinal tract. This hormone prompts the body to produce more insulin, limiting the elevation of blood sugar, this is particularly helpful for diabetics. The medication also sends signals to the brain telling it that the stomach is full which helps prevent overeating. GLP1s also slow down the rate at which food leaves the stomach, this is called delayed gastric emptying. Delayed gastric emptying leads to a prolonged sense of fullness and satiety, this further reduces caloric intake. GLP1s also increase energy expenditure and promote fat burning, which may lower cholesterol.

In the simplest of terms, GLP1s work because of a reduction in overall caloric intake. Many patients can experience as much as a 25% reduction in body weight! Prior to GLP1s, many patients were having to have surgery to achieve these type of results.

It should be noted that GLP1s may not be appropriate for everyone and that as with any medication there are risks. This is why it is so important to have a knowledgable provider to help you decide if they are right for you. Here at Total Weight Loss NP we are dedicated to ensuring that your individualized weight loss journey is the right one for you.
